Apple Introduces Accessibility Nutrition Labels in the App Store

Apple has taken a major step toward transparency and inclusion by announcing Accessibility Nutrition Labels for apps in the App Store. First unveiled on Global Accessibility Awareness Day and expanded during WWDC, this initiative requires apps to disclose which accessibility features they support—helping users make informed decisions before downloading.

What Accessibility Nutrition Labels Mean

These labels outline whether an app supports features such as VoiceOver, Voice Control, Larger Text, Dark Interface, Sufficient Contrast, Differentiation Without Color Alone, and Reduced Motion. While developers have had the option to add these labels for around two months, participation remains voluntary.

Testing Accessibility Claims in Text-to-Speech Apps

Many popular text-to-speech (TTS) apps present themselves as accessibility-first. With Apple’s new labeling system, users can now verify these claims. This creates a valuable opportunity to separate apps that truly prioritize accessibility from those that simply market it.

Speech Central Leads the Way

Speech Central was one of the very first apps to implement Accessibility Nutrition Labels. More importantly, the developers used this as a chance to review and improve accessibility support. Recent updates strengthened capabilities in areas like Differentiate Without Color Alone, Voice Control, and High Contrast. As a result, Speech Central now checks more accessibility boxes than any of its major competitors in the TTS space.

Competitors Lag Behind

Other text-to-speech apps such as Speechify, NaturalReader, and ElevenReader eventually published their accessibility labels—but at least a month later and without introducing new improvements. Their level of accessibility support remains significantly narrower compared to Speech Central. Meanwhile, Voice Dream, a well-known name in accessibility apps, has not yet published its accessibility labeling at all.

The Best Accessibility Option for iPhone and Mac

If accessibility is a top priority, Speech Central stands out as the most reliable choice on iPhone and Mac. By adopting Apple’s Accessibility Nutrition Labels early and continuously enhancing features, it demonstrates a stronger commitment to inclusive design than its rivals.
